The Corsair, a ballet in three acts premiered at the Paris Opera in 1856 and based on the poem by Lord Byron and the opera of the same name by G. Verdi, owes its notoriety to the great virtuosity of its choreographic score, with variations in which all the great dancers in history have distinguished themselves.
The corsair with wings on his feet
Created in 1865 in Tallinn as a society of “song and theater” The Estonian National Ballet has a century and a half of history. The Finnish architects Armas Lindgren and Wivi Lönn built a headquarters that suffered bombings and attacks in the two world wars and was definitively restored and adapted in 2005.
The Ballet and its headquarters are a seal of the cultural identity of a country that has made music and dance one of its greatest heritages..
Born in the city of Viljandi, its director since 2019, Linnar Looris, has been a dancer, trained at the Tallinn school and soloist for many years with the Estonian National Ballet, from the Birmingham Royal Ballet and the Houston Ballet of the United States.
The choreography and stage direction bear the signature of José Carlos Martínez, director of the National Dance Company since 2011 a 2019 and current director of the Paris Opera Ballet. Its production of The Corsair knows a global hit in the repertoire of several international companies. José Carlos Martínez imagined an elegant two-act version that simplifies the narrative, focusing on the love story between the privateer Conrad and the beautiful Medora. In an exotic and orientalist context very typical of the 19th century, Their romantic adventures are the pretext for a brilliant succession of dance numbers that highlight the quality of a great corps de ballet., like the virtuosity of the soloists who dance here some of the most famous variations of the great repertoire.
