Terence Blanchard is an American jazz musician, trumpeter, compository arreglista, considered one of the leading figures of the so called neo bop. He began studying piano with only 5 years old, collate instrument with the trumpet from 8 until 18. He studied jazz theory with self Ellis Marsalis, and he began to publicize the work of jazz trumpeters from the 14. Touched at the time the New Orleans Civic Orchestra, until he moved to New York (1980) to study classical trumpet.
Saxophonist Paul Jeffrey him into the big band of Lionel Hampton, with whom he remained until 1982. He joined the Jazz Messengers of Art Blakey, on the recommendation of Wynton Marsalis, who replaced, and assume the musical direction of the band until 1986. He also played with the group of pianist Larry Willis, and with his own quintet with Donald Harrison and Mulgrew Miller. After recording several albums, Blanchard would leave the group 1990.
In the decade of 1990, He participated in numerous soundtracks, especially in Spike Lee films. As director of his own groups, made numerous recordings for Columbia Records and Blue Note, and on several occasions he was nominated for a Grammy, of those who earned 4. In 2001, He recorded with Diana Krall, Jane Monheit, Dianne Reeves, y Cassandra Wilson, and he began to take care of the artistic direction of “Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz” the University of Southern California.
In December 2002, Scarecrow Press publicó Contemporary Cat: Terence Blanchard with Special Guests, an authorized biography of Blanchard, written by Anthony Magro.
