The cross is a Renaissance work by the Cordoban artist Hernán Ruiz II and dates back to the 16th century., It is one of the main examples of its typology and one of the main architectural works that were carried out at the time., like the Giralda bell tower by the same author.

This act of vandalism was committed this morning and occurs after the theft of the Cross of the Inquisition on the façade of the Seville City Hall four years ago, followed by the theft of the Mercurio sword from the fountain located a short distance from this incident.

The mayor has already spoken out on the matter, expressing his <<maximum condemnation of this vandalism that we are not going to consent to in Seville>>.
