La Expo’92 coincidió con los 500 years of the “discovery” of America and for that anniversary the theme of the Universal Exhibition was The age of discovery. The connection of the city of Seville with the colonial domination of Latin America was maintained throughout centuries as it was the access port for trade between America and Europe.. Taking these circumstances as a starting point, we have worked on several lines that try to come together in this exhibition project..
First, a specific mention is made of the Expo that could have been and was not, through the project of Emilio Ambasz, and to the Expo that was but is no longer through the Palenque of José Miguel de Prada Poole.
Second, A brief review of the artistic and cultural panorama around the year is sought 1992. For this, it is part of the book art from 1900. Modernity, Antimodernity, Postmodernity, de Rosalind Krauss, Yve-Alain Bois, Hal Foster y Benjamin Buchloh, that dedicates the year 1992 to institutional criticism and artists who question the museum as a place for the dissemination of ideas and its relationship with colonialism. Works by artists Fred Wilson appear in this chapter., Andrea Fraser, Renée Green y Mark Dion, of which some of those works or others from those years are now exhibited. At the same time, given the historical lack of interest of Spanish and Andalusian artists in these issues, Patricia Esquivias has been invited, María Cañas, Rogelio López Cuenca and Elo Vega to produce specific projects in relation to colonialism and the Universal Exposition of the 92. This review of the period also includes works by Curro González and Pilar Albarracín made at that time that speak of the artistic context., cultural y social local.
On the other hand, In recent years, the task of reviewing some of the ghosts that inhabit our space and that have a long history has been undertaken through rare collections that are preserved here and that had not yet been exhibited.. Always in dialogue or discussion with works of contemporary art, On this occasion, two sets closely linked to the purpose of this project are exhibited.: the collection of gifts received during the 92 and the audiovisual archive of said event. By exhibiting them, the aim is not only that they can be known, but also to engage in a conversation not exempt from conflict with institutional criticism and what the artists mentioned in those years proposed in those years. art from 1900, along with the new projects now produced for this occasion. Therefore, the Andalusian Center of Contemporary Art, coinciding with the 25 anniversary of the first exhibition that was organized at its headquarters in 1992, presents a project that critically investigates events and celebrations that have the reason for being in their relationship with colonialism.
