opera Fidelio. Teatro de la Maestranza, Seville
Although the curtain will open to show a gloomy prison on the outskirts of Sevilla, the Teatro de la Maestranza opera season enters its luminous flying the flag of hope, fraternity and equality. Why “Fidelio”, only opera by Ludwig van Beethoven (1770 – 1827) hides, under its romantic plot devoted to exalt conjugal love, a vibrant exaltation of humanism, equality and fraternity against any form of authoritarianism, to the extent that it has been considered the first musical drama of modern history and an act of faith in the regenerative power of civilization and culture.
Released in Vienna 1805, "Fidelio" had a difficult gestation-and a failed release: the first version did not enjoy any success- Beethoven therefore had no experience in theater. Enshrined in the French tradition of "rescue opera" -in his argument, wives helped to free their husbands, presos-, the story of the hero Florestan (imprisoned for denouncing political abuses of Pizarro, Governor jail) and his wife, Leonora that, man disguised under the name of Fidelio, enters prison to help, It did not catch on in the public and, after that first release without success, Beethoven recomposed the work reducing their initial 3 acts just 2, -now changing its opening known as "Leonora III" and presenting it again in the same theater 29 March 1806, but already with the name of "Leonora". Then yes he succeeded.
Years later, in 1814, Beethoven -along the poet and actor George F. Treitschke- revisits the work and presents, under the name of "Fidelio", the 23 Kärntnertortheater May in Vienna with great success. Today is his only opera. Fidelio combines elements of German "Singspiel" with other Italian School and under his singing -for the time, feminista "before the letter"- of conjugal love, It is a political creation, very progressive, explaining in full force. Romain Rolland, cited by Arturo Reverter, and expresses these values conquest of freedom. "The great and classical humanity" Leonore " (…) It stands as a monument to the better Europe ".
A theatrical action drama and heroism; -the pages choral singing chorus of prisoners "O sky! What happiness! Freedom, Do we you are returned?”- of shocking beauty, arias of great poignancy by Florestan, beautiful vocal ensembles such as the quartet "Mir ist so wunderbar" - ... more so energetic and muscular as not without lyricism score, they build an opera that does not fit the Italian canon of the time and risking a contorted musical writing for travel, scenic, musical and dramatically, from darkness to light, from oppressive darkness into light freedom.
The Teatro de la Maestranza resubmits its production of "Fidelio" with stage direction by José Carlos Plaza, with the special collaboration of the Ministry of Culture through the State Society for Cultural Commemorations. Topping the ROSS, Pedro Halffter. And leading the cast, by the Choir A. A. the Teatro de la Maestranza, major international voices like dramatic soprano Elena Pankratova Russian, acclaimed for their vocal techniques and strong stage presence; one of the most celebrated tenors of his generation, Roberto Saccà, whose previous commitment to this "Fidelio" is their participation, as Loge, in "Rheingold" of Wagner's Ring at the Bayreuth Festival cycle under the direction of Marek Janowski. Thomas Gazheli, Wilhelm Schwinghammer, Mercedes Arcuri, Beñat Egiarte and Adrian Eröd complete the main roles.
