Before the Feria de Sevilla was not decorated with lanterns. Was in the year 1877 when due to the visit of Queen Elizabeth

II of Spain to the Seville Fair, the leaders of Sevilla are preparing to make a unified decoration fair for homogenizing and highlight its best.

For rebranding is decided to have the painter Gustavo Bacarisas who he was inspired by Chinese lanterns for creating colorful lanterns current. Also when electricity came to the fair in Seville in 1883, bulbs in the lanterns were inserted that caused a great visual impact.
A century later, in 1983 a municipal ordinance that officially regulate the use of farolillo as an official decoration in the Seville Fair created.
