The 7 December 2023, the “Third of Olive Groves”, Historical Recreation Association of the 16th and 17th century, will go out through the streets of Seville to celebrate the victory
of the troops of the Spanish thirds in the Dutch town of Empel in 1585.
This Association has been developing this activity for the fifth consecutive year.; one like
itative formed by more than fifty people, among “military” personnel (rodeleros, boobies, standard bearers, field master, captain, sergeant…), in addition to "civilians" dressed in clothing and uses of the time, They will recreate the so-called “miracle of Empel” in the streets of Seville, event that occurred during the “Eighty Years War”, in which the Tercio Viejo of Zamora commanded by the field master Francisco Arias de Bobadilla, faced and defeated in very adverse conditions a flotilla of one hundred ships of the rebels of the States General of the Netherlands, under the command of Admiral Philip of Hohenlohe-Neuenstein.
In Spain, Catholic tradition attributes the victory thanks to the intervention of the Immaculate Conception
Conception, since the night before a table appeared with the image of the Purísima while
he was digging a trench. Thus, the Immaculate Conception was proclaimed patron saint of the Tercios
Spanish people, current Spanish Infantry.
